New Elephant Species ‘Found’

January 22, 2011

Well, they’ve been there all the time (elephants are rather difficult to hide), but scientists have announced there are 3 different elephant species, and not 2, as was previously believed.

The African Forest elephant is its own separate species, and not a variation of the African Savanna  elephant. Genetically, they are as different to the African Savanna elephant as the Asian elephant is to the wooly mammoth.

To read more about this new species, click here and head on over to mongabay.

We like the story, not only because it’s interesting, but it’s also about a place where it’s nice and warm and bitter cold and snow are but a dream.
