Tonight, A Tribute to the 9/11 Rescue Dogs

September 8, 2011

Yesterday, we spoke about the hero dogs of 9/11, well if you want to show your support, join Lorenzo, Whoopi Goldberg, Victoria Stilwell and others in celebration of their bravery tonight.

The Tribute to the Hero Dogs of 9/11 is to be held tonight at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York City, with a reception and media outreach starting at 5.30, and the dinner program at 6.30pm.

And, on Veteran’s Day, the Hallmark Channel will broadcast a  90 minute tribute to American Humane Association’s Hero Dogs, so make sure you tune in.

The dinner’s proceeds will go towards helping the American Humane Society fund their many worthy projects, including the Red Star™ Animal Emergency Services, which rescues and shelters animals after natural disasters; Animal-Assisted Therapy programs; and programs that benefit children in the child protective system.

The event is in honour of our four-footed heros of 9/11, and they will all be remembered, including Sirius, the only dog to die during the disaster, and Roselle, who led her blind master and his colleague down 78 flights of steps to safety in a World Trade Center building 15 minutes before it collapsed.

Its stories like this and others that will be spoken about tonight, and these dogs will be remembered, honoured and celebrated. Animals are so much more than a companion who we feed in the morning and night, and who greets us when we come home. Sometimes they are a reason for living, or the reason we are still alive today (often in a more literal meaning).

But whether an animal is a bonafide hero who worked tirelessly in a disaster to save lives or bring home something of the dead so a family can put their loved one to rest, or simply our best friend never judges and keeps loneliness at bay, they all deserve to have a loving home, and to live in comfort and safety, no matter what their role to society is.

So tonight, if you can’t make it, then click here to either donate, join up, or take action to help the AHA in their wonderful work, or simply give thanks to our own Prince Lorenzo Borghese, who is representing us all, as he honours the often-overlooked heros of 9/11.

10 Years Later…Meet One of 9/11 Rescue Dogs, Keiser

September 8, 2011

This Sunday will be the 10 year anniversary of the World Trade Centre terrorist attack.

More than 300 rescue dogs were sent to work during those harrowing, gruelling days. Ten years later, only 13 of those dogs survive. And one of them, Keiser (sorry, sweet doggy K, we’re not absolutely sure on the spelling of your name, but we can say you’re not only an amazing canine, you’re incredibly cute and sweet, to boot.), lives the retired life in Indiana.

If you remember back to the days just after the attack, especially if you were in NYC; they were dark and awful and if you were able to get past the shock of what had happened, the terrible and senseless loss of life, and often the loss of someone near and dear to you from the fall of the twin towers, you could only think of what these amazing brave souls, the men and women and dogs who risked their lives day after day digging through the debris, looking for a survivor, and then simply something tangible to bring home to the families so they’d have something to bury… Well, these police and firefighters and volunteers, they often looked to the dogs for hope and comfort and that sense of peace that only an animal can bring.

So it’s absolutely fitting, in all the benefits and events being held over the next few days, that we all honour our special four legged furry heros. The ones who tirelessly worked to help us, asking for nothing more than a drink of water, a bite of food and shelter.

For all those who were there, we thank you, human and canine, and for all those who lost someone, our hearts are with you. We remember things like this, so we can do everything to prevent it happening again.

In both World Wars, the words, ‘Lest We Forget’ were used on remembrance days, and I think they are apropos here.

This clip is really lovely, and we get to meet Keiser and her family, and it’s good to see, even though she is now old, she is still a pure spirit, and she is loved.
