Miracle Dog Daniel

October 31, 2011

Meet Daniel, the adorable dog from Alabama who survived the gas chamber.

Yes, this is a sad-happy story. And it contains something we don’t want to think about – the fate of animals who aren’t claimed or found a home in kill shelters.

The problem is the no-kill shelters have limited funds which means limited space, and while they take as many cats and dogs as they can, there are still many, many more who have nowhere else to go but to the shelters that put the animals down (or kill them). If people stop buying pets from pet shops, and people stop dumping the pets when they’re no longer a cute baby, and if everyone got their pet fixed, and adopted instead of buying from breeders, then this problem of having unwanted animals would no longer exist.

Little Daniel the beagle was in a shelter in Alabama when his time ran out. He and 4 other puppies were put into the gas chamber, only somehow, he survived. When they opened the door, the other dogs were dead, but Daniel was alive and wagging his tail.

The staff named him ‘Daniel’ and called him a miracle dog. The no-kill shelter, The Eleventh Hour, in New Jersey heard about Daniel and were so moved they took him in.

Now they’re looking for a forever home for Daniel, and after all he’s been through, I hope he finds one!

Epileptic Dogs – What Not To Do (Part 1)

October 29, 2011

If you were ever a fan of HBO’s singing comedy duo, The Flight of the Conchords, then you’ll most likely know this song.

“Song for Epileptic Dogs” was performed by New Zealand’s 2nd most popular folk duo in their second and final season of their titular smash hit. In the episode they were competing for the love of the same woman, and the cause they used to try and win her love was dogs with epilepsy.

The song is very funny, but epilepsy in dogs is no laughing matter. It is a manageable disorder, and one where, when handled correctly, a dog can lead a long and very happy life, to which we say yay.

Tomorrow, we’ll be bringing you a much more in depth article on dogs with epilepsy, but until then, enjoy some laughs and fun with Jemaine and Bret from Flight of the Conchords.

Oh, and remember, strobe lighting around epileptics: it’s not a good idea.

It’s Black Cat Awareness Day!

October 27, 2011

I think it may only be in England, but I don’t care; as the owner of an exceptionally awesome black cat, I think every day should be Black Cat Awareness Day – 0r Appreciation Day!

Black cats, it seems are the cats that are overlooked when it comes to adoption, and they’re the kitties that spend the longest in shelters, before adoption.

I’m assuming this is because some people think they bring bad luck. This is the biggest load of ridiculous I’ve ever heard! Black cats bring you luck, they bring you love, and they bring you wonderful companionship!

I know they’ve been given a bad rap with the whole witch thing, Halloween, and the bad luck tag, but it’s silly. Cats, all cats, are fantastic creatures. They’re proud, smart, adorable animals, and, regardless of what some dogs might try and tell you, cats (including the black ones) are extremely loving and loyal pets. Just as loving and loyal as dogs. They’ll greet you at the door, snuggle up, follow you around. Of course, they’re curious, independent and like having their own lives (chasing dust balls, toy mice, and eating catnip and taking catnaps are all very important to the modern cat), but they are extremely loyal and loving and affectionate creatures. Cats rule! Especially black cats.

Boo to the silly people who overlook black cats.

If you’re thinking of adopting a cat, check out the black ones. The one in the picture is Marvin, sometime blogger on here, and he’s the most amazing cat I’ve known. I couldn’t imagine my life without him. He’s got his own fan club, too.

All cats are worthy of having a forever home, so when it comes to choosing your feline friend (or when it comes to being chosen by a feline), make sure you go with an open mind, open heart, and if a black cat seems the right fit, go for it. You won’t regret it.

We’d love to see your black cat, and hear how important he or she is. So, tell us!!

It’s Adopt-A-Dog Month!

October 22, 2011

That’s right! October is Adopt-A-Dog month, and has been since the first, so you have 9 more days to celebrate, perhaps by adopting your new BFF?

According to Lorenzo, if everyone adopted a dog instead of buying them, then the dogs in the shelters, pounds and on death row would be zero, which is a pretty great number.

I know there are some of us who are desperate for a pure-breed of a certain type of dog, but don’t despair. You, too, can adopt. There are many breed-specific adopting organisations, so do some googling and you may soon be on your way to having the dog of your dreams, and saving a dog (not to mention giving a shelter pup a forever home).

The American Humane organisation has a great article on adopting dogs, what to expect, and how to be the best dog parent in the world.

So, spread the word, and if you’re thinking of getting a dog, remember, adopt, don’t buy.
