Happy Earth Day – Green Pets Are Cool

April 22, 2012

And no, I do not want any of you to dye their dogs, cats, ferrets or gerbils green (like that bizarre Chinese craze a while back, where everyone seemed to be running around with rainbow dogs).

It’s Earth Day today, a day to honour our planet, and do something to help reduce our carbon footprint. One great way we can do that is to make our pets as green as possible. Even the smallest thing counts.

So, what are you going to do?

There are lots of things you can do, but we have some great suggestions here (and we’d love to hear more tips from you in the comments.

Spay/Neuter – Puppies and kittens are adorable, but when pets start siring babies, then we end up with many more unwanted animals. Animals who live on the streets or are sent to shelters. And, spayed and neutered pets live longer, healthier lives, which means less vet visits. And we also suggest adopting a pet, rather than buying one.

Recycle – The cans your pet’s food comes in, the boxes litter is bought in, all these things can be recycled, and makes for smaller landfills. But recycling can be as simple as using those plastic bags your groceries come in, your veggies come in, as doggie bags.

Sustainable – Instead of paper plates to put your pet’s food on, use a special bowl or plate for them. And if you like to give your dog food and water when out and about, then bring along something you can reuse – there are some great collapsable and reusable bowls on the market. Take it a step further and get your pet toys, bedding and clothes made of sustainable and recycled materials.

There are so many different ways to green your pet. Happy Earth Day!

French Horses Helping To Green Towns

October 2, 2010

In France, there are now 60 towns who are practising a greener way of life -and seemingly taking a step back to quieter, cleaner times – by trading in their rubbish trucks for horse & carts.

Many of the towns say the horse and cart is a cleaner way to collect rubbish and recycling. It’s quieter, they say, less exhaust fume, and it also means no more blocked roads on narrow, century old roads (as trucks weren’t designed for such narrow streets).

So what are your thoughts of using strong carthorses as a greener way to help our world, one clip-clop at a time?

(Mainly) USA’s Endangered Animals

May 29, 2010

by Diana Waldhuber

A little while ago, the LA Times online ran some photos of endangered species. While they’re mostly American, it is something I think  people should be thinking about.

With the oil spill off the Gulf still not cleaned up, we have to face the abuse we humans have heaped upon this planet of ours. I know most of us are doing what we can to be greener, and every little bit helps.

But it’s time to do what we can to change the bigger picture. There’s no need to rely on crude oil. There are alternatives. It’s up to us to help push our governments into different forms of energy. But even little things like taking the bus or train, walking more, riding our bikes instead of driving make a big difference.

There is solar power which in many areas is more than feasible: it makes sense. Use  cloth bags for your groceries.  If you’re buying one item, say no to the bag and either carry it or pop it into your purse or bag.

Just being aware that our choices affect all of the animal kingdom is already a step in the right direction.

Of course, these are only a few of the endangered animals in the world.

Here are the pictures… And think about it: what is it YOU can do to help our world, and our animals?

Greening Your Cat

April 26, 2010

by Diana Waldhuber

No, I’m not suggesting you dye your cat green (and thanks to the gospel of Karin for this awesome picture), but you can green your cat.

The simplest way to green your cat is to keep him indoors and not let him eat all the wildlife (in some places, native animals are endangered and your kitty is a very adept hunter.

The second simplest way is to switch to an environmentally friendly, clumping litter. Clay litters are messy and in my experience, make for a smelly litter box and one very unhappy cat. There are all kinds of litters out there, made from everything from newspaper to wheat.

The third simplest way is to make some toys of your own. Anything from brightly coloured strips of rope to knitted catnip-filled creatures, or crinkled up balls of tin foil will do. If you don’t want to make y our own cat toys then read the labels and buy intelligently. Recycled materials, natural materials, organic materials are all something that should be high on your list.

So, don’t you now feel good your cat is the trend-making creature he always knew he was, deep down inside?
