Hurricane Irene Has Hit North Carolina & Speeding Up The East Coast – Are You Prepared?

August 26, 2011

Whether you think it’s hype, hurricane Irene is coming, and to say she’s one doozy of a storm is putting it rather mildly. She’s big, she’s powerful, she’s angry, and she’s pretty much going to do what she’s going to do.

NYC has an unprecedented mandatory evacuation in place in many parts of town, particularly along the coast and rivers. But we’re going to feel it. Even if she heads out to sea (which at the time of posting looks extremely unlikely), we’ll hear her knocking.

This is the biggest hurricane to hit the East Coast in 50 years. And she’s now shooting off the odd tornado.

I think we all know how to tune into the weather channel or to the news sites, but our pets, as well as us, are in potential danger.

For me, pets are in the worst position. They don’t know what’s happening. We can’t tell them. What we can do is prepare, have them ready to go if we’re in an area that’s under a severe warning or a voluntary evacuation zone. And we can be calm around them, because they feed off our energy, as well as the energy in the air.

Our brave friends over in Florida, Haute or Not Pets have weathered many hurricanes, so they know what they’re talking about. We’re going to hand the hat of knowledge over to them (it’s sort of like the Harry Potter sorting hat, but better, because this hat gives you information that could save your pet’s life).

Stay safe, fellow Royal Pet Club people, stay safe.

Abused Florida Dog Gets A Second Chance

October 1, 2010

We all like a happy ending, especially when it comes to animals and their welfare.

Things weren’t looking so good for mixed breed dog, Grace, when her owner stabbed her in May, nearly killing her.

Grace was rescued by the Lee County Domestic Animal Services, where she was nursed back to health. After this, she entered the Lee County Cell Dogs program where this friendly and trusting dog (yes, even after being stabbed)  where she received obedience training and relearned good socialisation skills (the program uses inmates who were imprisoned for non-violent crimes to help train shelter dogs so they become more adoptable.

And Grace’s happy ending? Because her case was broadcast on the news, Kristi Mershon adopted Grace!

So now Grace has her own loving and safe home, complete with a family to call her very own.

Boat Alarms Could Save Manatees

June 15, 2010

In Florida, the endangered Manatee come in throngs to the warm waters every winter (they need warmer waters to survive).

Unfortunately for the Manatee, humans in boats love to speed through the waters of the everglades…and the ‘sea cows’ can’t hear the low sounds of the motors and often get injured by the boats. Which is really isn’t a good thing for the Manatee.

But now experts are hoping a new high-pitched boat alarm will help to warn the Manatee and save them from injury or even death.

8 National Parks Threatened By Oil Spill

June 12, 2010

Unlike some national parks, the oil spill hasn’t reached these places of natural beauty, rare animals and coral reefs, but it very well could.

With no signs of plugging the whole, or even slowing the gushing leak, experts are already preparing themselves for more disaster to come.

The Gulf coast national parks, including Florida’s Dry Tortuga’s National Park, have had personnel dispatched to the areas to ready themselves for whatever is to come.
