Dog Days Of Summer: Dealing With The Heatwave

July 19, 2011

Our friends at Haute or Not Pets have a great article about the actual meaning of ‘the dog days of summer’, so click here to read it!

Speaking of summer and hotness (not in the good, sexy way, but in the temperature way), we’re having a heatwave, or about to, over most of the country. We’re talking temperatures of 90 degrees or higher. Combine that with heavy humidity and you’re going to be really uncomfy and feel like you can’t do anything. You’re going to need to drink lots of extra water and make sure you don’t get sunstroke.

Of course, you have ways to make yourself cool. You can put on lighter clothes, turn on the air, go for a swim.

Your pets can’t.

Think about having to wear a fur coat all year round, no matter how hot it gets.

Our pets have to do that (the furry kind!), and they can’t get their own water, and they can’t turn on the air or go for a swim when they want. So you have to really be their best friend during really hot weather. When you’re at work, don’t leave the air off, put the timer on, so your pet is comfortable. Leave out plenty of wanter for your pet to hydrate with. As for swimming, well, most cats aren’t going to go in for that, but with your dogs, that’s going to be your time together.

Keep your pet comfortable during the heatwave, and you’ll have a happy, healthy pet.
