Australia Has Smart Fish

July 18, 2011

Who knew? Certainly not anyone until very recently. Sure we know dolphins are smart, and that goldfish actually have memories longer than 6 seconds (actually I only found that out recently. Apparently they have memories of up to a few months, which is probably why the fish you were annoying when you were a kid kept giving you the fishy version of the side eye whenever you passed his bowl for weeks after the event). But fish using tools?

Yes, fish have been found in Australia that use tools.

A professional diver, Scott Gardner, took the photos of the blackspot turkfish using a rock as a smashing tool to get to the delicious morsels inside cockle shells.

It’s pretty amazing, and you can click here to read the article in National Geographic.

Personally, I’m worried about what’s going to happen when they pass the stone age and move on up! And if this is what this fish is doing, what have the dolphins been up to? Between you and me, I think it’s high time we treat all dolphins with respect, otherwise there may be a dolphin coup on our hands in a few years…
